Yea so there you go. Well as i said, not entirely sure what has happened, all i do know is i either run it without them or go tearing the motor down to repair it. Think i may stick to the first option :lol: :D

Ok, I was intrigued, so did a bit of reading over lunch... :ugeek:

The way I read this is that the front shaft is held in with a retainer (different retainer to the seal retainer, which is a separate, later addition) the back shaft has thrust washers.

Some edited bits from the service manual;
Image

The front shaft is the one sticking out in this detail below it has a rear thrust face (the block) but no thrust washer to hold it in (that's what the retainer does)
Image
The rear balancer shaft (the driven one) has thrust washers both ways.

For confirmation, the front one definitely shouldn't have much end float!;
Image

I think the reason for the different retaining methods will be because the front shaft protrudes through the oil pump housing (so isn't held in by it) while the back shaft is covered (and therefore retained by) the oil pump housing.

This is the final confirmation for me;

I can't recall... Did you take the oil pump off when you had the engine out of the car, or did you not touch that?
If you had it off :hurr: :oops: did you refit the retainer? If not, that's your problem.
If you did refit the retainer, it may have failed or come loose? If so and if the shaft continues to rotate (somehow) it would now be wearing against the back of the oil pump housing? (Which would not be good) or there might be some bits of the retainer floating around inside the oil pump?

Unless I've read that lot wrong?

Just reading the manual. Its says the front balancer shaft is held in via a retainer plate. It also says if end play is excessive then this plate should be inspected. So my guess is its either come loose or its worn out :?

EDIT beaten to it :lol:. Good job wurly. No didn't touch the oil pump atall mate. Its a little odd as to what has happened tbh :?

Re: Another Track 4th gen - CDA intake - MOMO WHEEL

Post by Thebusofwoe » Wed Jul 02, 2014 11:39 pm

Well been a while since an update. Went up to @W1ggz to help out for the day a few weeks ago, got some spare parts off him, Thank you :D , And also swapped over mine and Crunchy's intakes :D :D He gave me this in return for me doing work on his car for him 8-)

Also screwed the front number plate on the NS of the bumper. Was only ment to be temp but I kind of like it there so its going to stay 8-)

So had a go at fitting the newly acquired Momo steering wheel and boss. Well didn't go as smoothly as I had hoped for tbh :?
I didn't get any pics of the problems but basically, I cant connect the horn, and I have to get some 14mm washers to get the boss nut tight :? I removed the 4ws main angle sensor and SRS slip ring, realised there is no pin for the horn (as it runs through the SRS connector system :? ) and then the boss nut wont tighten down against the boss :x :troll:

Well I got it on well enough to move it around my drive but I am going to have to retro fit something for the horn button and get some washers for the nut. . . . . . . .

Before . . .

After . . .

Sorry for the crap pic but got dark and I wasn't giving up :lol:
I am well impressed by both the oem looking boss and the condition and size of the wheel. It feels as if its ment to be there, and that im not steering a UFO around :lol: :lol: :lol: 8-)

So thanks to @Crunchyadams82 for the CDA 8-) Thanks to @NafemanNathan for the boss 8-) and @rodanmk2 For the Momo wheel 8-) Also thanks to W1ggz again for the parts mate. Happy days 8-) :D

Still have a jobby load to do before August. . .

Fit replacement rear drop links
Skim front discs and fit Hawk HP+ pads
Bleed brake fluid with Motul RBF660
Fit front poly bush set
Replace NSF lower arm
Get tracking done
Do valve clearances
Fit 2 new tyres
Fit facelift parking brake lever and console
Fit cruise control buttons into dash area.
Fit bucket seats I have to pic up from Greeny
Fit 4 point harnesses I have

So not a lot :lol: :facepalm:
I am hoping to get a lot of this done on a Saturday at work where I can use a ramp and the brake disc skimmer/lathe. I will of coarse get lots of pics and an update. Will also do a picture tour of our place :lol:

Cheers chaps :)

Well I fitted this properly this eve. I got proper sized washers for behind the nut, only to find that when I wound it down to the boss's stop, it jammed up against the column trim :facepalm: :evil: So had to put 2 washers behind the boss, then 1 more 14mm washer behind the nut :evil: Finally got it down and tight. Still no horn yet but will sort that next week. So its on and it feels amazing 8-) 8-) 8-).

I've just seen you've had trouble with that boss bud. I've had that on 3 4th gens now and it slips on perfectly on all of them. One with cruise control and the other two base models, none with SRS :? Sorry bud, I would have said had I known. Glad you got it to fit in the end, but is enough spline engaged and tight enough if you had to put a washer behind it?

Yea no problem. Yea its completely safe. Full spline engagement ;) only had to space it out a little to bring it away from the plastic trims. But its on, with minimal fuss so i am very happy with it :D :D
