what a day.

Post by honda-hardy » Sat Jun 14, 2014 1:41 am

what a day... Friday the 13th. muffin job.
today was lovely and sunny so i took the opportunity to change the bottom ball joints, 1 inner c.v gaiter and sort out a knocking with the engine.

Image

4 ball joints, 2 drop links and a c.v gaiter.

took bloody ages, 12+ hours. everything was seized. split pins were stuck fast. drive shaft nuts murder tight. driveshafts siezed in the bearings. ball joints wouldnt pop. but i finally got there in the end.

Image

both sides stripped, took the legs up to the garage so i could strip the ball joints out with an oxy torch. getting them out was not as bad as i thought. refitting them was a different story though, one type was easy to pop back in, but one type had c clips to hold them in, bloody aftermarket parts. i have never in all my life had such a struggle.

Image

i advise to buy honda genuine parts for the ball joints as they are so much easier and fit great. but in the meantime, job done.

then on to some more friday the 13th jobby.

went to fit the drop links and they were different too. too short different angles and no frikkin good and to top it off, one of the ones on my car broke replacing the ball joints.

ok. now for the installation of the legs, refit the brakes. but NO. FRIDAY THE 13TH STRIKES AGAIN.

tightening up one of the caliper slide bolts and it started to go tight half way down, so i backed it off and it turned a revolution and then siezed. but thats not the only issue, the slide pin is normally held against the caliper casting to stop it from spinning, but no, it span and rounded the ends making it virtually impossible to undo the seized bolt. but finally the bolt came out with a stripped thread. a hacksaw blade is all i had the clean the thread. so i put the damaged bolt in the good slider and good bolt with the damaged slider for now.

what a day.

If it's any consolation, I normally only get half that done in the time you took and with at least double the amount of things going wrong, usually from seized and rusted bolts, which makes me very liberal with copper grease or threadlocker on most things!

Good days work though!

Tough day Sam, but well done for getting there. The consolation is that you won't have to do that again for a while.

Hardy 1, 13th 0. Lol. I am a winner. But another way of thinking is that @performanceautoworks will now have an easier job when doing my engine build, as I have greased the cv joint splines and replaced all of the split pins.

Well Friday the 13th is still biting me in the ass. The cheap after market ball joints rattle. Although they are being held in to the hub assembly with the c clip they knock going over bumps. Also one of the other compressed in joints moves up and down in its location. When the car is on all four wheels the joint is under load so is held in place but when you jack the wheel off the ground you can actually move the wheel up and down on the ball joint. I have had to use some loctite 638 to hold it in. So I have wasted time and money on them. So at great expense I have had to buy all 4 joints for £171 for the joints and £20 for the nuts as I threw the old lot away. You live and learn.
