yes, far as I know all ok inside
they could get no reading from one of the leads

Ok. Well as far as i can remember the cap wires are connected to the loom with bullet connectors at the cap.

if i could find which wire on the is the offending one, i will try running a replacement wire to test before i send him off to the doctors when i can get a day off during the week

Send it to ground at the ECU end? Should achieve the same as grounding it at the rear?

Hi Guys, thought i would give an update
Car has been to Honda, their scanner could not talk to my prelude
The sparky they use all the time pulled him apart, and can't find what is causing the fault
So, I am at a loss, no idea what to do now

Honda seem to have forgotten how to talk to these older cars, sad but true. The wire that runs from the rear lights to the front is the one mentioned in the wiki article - white with green strip:

You'll need to trace that forward I'd think. I assume you've sent it to ground at the rear as per:
