Re: Honda-Hardy's type "s" express
the engine doesn't technically need a rebuild. but. it does puff out a bit of blue on over run.
on the drive home i have to drive down a hill that is 2 miles or so long. so i need to use no accelerator, just stay in 5th riding the gear down hill. now, at the bottom of the hill is a junction. when i pull away i get a bit of blue smoke.
the way i see it, is i dont want to own any other daily driver. and i want my car perfect so it lasts me years. it has absolutly zero rust in it, i have just a few bodywork issues to sort. just bought a load of suspension ball joints to sort out the squeeks and rattles. so thats where im at.
oh nitin, its not a competition.
but yes i win. lol.

be aware that after a rebuild my type S engine puffs out blue smoke on overrun.
Just sayin'
You might spend 4k and come out the other side with EXACTLY the same performance and a bit of blue smoke on over run after going down a hill or coming out of a junction.
If it aint obviously broke dont fix it imho. Your engine is not broke mate, just a type S with its bit of smoke, like most of them. 2/3 of mine have and one of those was built by rich himself.....
I know its annoying sometimes to be driving your nice car and know that people are only judging you on the smoke outta the tailpipe but buying a whole new cars worth of engine rebuild seems a little over the top when its still got all the ponies.
have you tried putting in a heavier grade of oil? If its the rings or the valve stems that'll help. you have to think of the extra blowby pressure given the 11:1 CR on an engine with a few miles. Not worth rebuilding but altering your maintenance to fit the cars needs.

have you had a leakdown test?
also do you have any dyno's of the engine?
having a minty fresh type s block is no bad thing, since in this country they are not so common

i want my car to last. i have the money, but am i being too eager?
i have not done a compression test. but will look in to it.
rich, when could you fit this in?
also, had my car dyno'd at powerstation 209.3 bhp and 147.9lbf/ft torque.

Re: Honda-Hardy's type "s" express
just to add, i am also putting in about a litre and a half of oil in a month, not only am i doing the rebuild for smoking issues but i have a lot of oil leaks too. plus all gaskets, belts fluids cleaning etc will be done. also might get a new clutch fitted too as it will be all apart anyway.
