my claim involved 3 vehicles, by the next morning the lead vehicle owner had all three insurers details, purely based on our vehicle reg's, if you've got nothing to run from, don't try and hide, leave the prospective insurers to sort it out.

I've just been told by a friend that police should have been called and that because they were not called the guy has not got a leg to stand on and that I should offer to pay for the bumper nd that's it

Police need to be called if there is an injury.

For what it's worth, I had a little (5-8mph) shunt once, my Calibra met the back of a mk3 Fiesta (over sensitive ABS rolled me into her), we exchanged bumper scuffs and insurance details and I took photos of the damage. I went to work.
I got home at 8pm and phoned the woman to offer to pay for her bumper as it was unpainted so you couldn't hide the scuff mark with paint. She told me I took too long to call her back so she phoned the insurance company and they will be in touch. Her insurance company was in touch, along with a solicitors letter! She was claiming for a NEW CAR, compensation for 8 weeks off work, 8 weeks unable to leave the house, 8 weeks loss of libido(!), 8 weeks of back pain etc etc... she wanted close to £27k and because this was so high my insurance company contacted me and asked how I'd like to proceed - I sent them the damage pics and said, please please please let her take me to court, I want to hear about her apparent miracle meeting with Jesus 8 weeks after the incident.
After them seeing the pictures of the damage and knowing that I fixed my Calibra with T-Cut, I believe she was charged with fraud.

Long story short, if they are claiming whiplash and had sleeping kids in the back who didn't even wake up, I think you can and should call bullshit!

There are other good reasons to call the police in some other types of accidents too.

Oh absolutely, but the only time I know for sure that they are needed is when someone is hurt.

If it's just a little rear end shunt, I'm not sure that they're needed.. especially if everyone cleared the scene by just driving away.

I managed to have 2 accidents in the same month a couple of years ago. One went 50/50, the other ended up being decided as my fault. First one total cost my insurers had to pay out was about £750, and the second was £4K. I don't really know how but I only lost 1 years NCB so it went down to 4 I think, and my premium went up less than £100.

One thing I learned is that it doesn't really matter what actually happened. What matters more is how you claim it happened. Because I was honest about the second accident and the other guy lied, I was held at fault. The insurers called it 'the balance of probability'

So you might just be better off letting the insurers sort it all out. After all that's what you pay them for.

Once I hit the guy who was leaving the petrol station. I called Police and they refused comming on scene as nobody get hurt. So sometimes it is only a waste of time.

BTW my car was looking even worse than yours now. Insurance company decided it have to be totaled. I bought it back from them and I fixed this for around 50GBP. From local scrap I get wing and headlight and this was total cost. There was some marks left on a bumper but because car was black and bumper under the paint was black as well I left it like it was. You wouldn't notice it from 2 meters

I rang insurance and they are sorting it out, told me to chill out and they will fix the damage that's what they are ther for, so I just need to worry about fixing my own car now went to my garage in Enfield and he added putting on a bumper, light and wing along with timing belt, service and some suspension bits I'm going to try and get in to get it all done in one hit over a weekend

I think I will always have a lude now to be honest, there's nothing quite like driving down the street in a car most people have not seen before or hardly ever see, I do enjoy like the 'what is it?' Or 'oh it's a honda' I love the fact that there's not that many left and they look different to all the other bum droppings floating about on the road
