so they could still fail it if its been taped even if its not letting in dirt? would you have any room to argue it with the tester at all? i only ask as i had a bit of a nightmare with a split ball joint boot on my mondeo, and was tempted to just put some sealant on it for the retest but didnt think it would pass.

We'll as long as what is on there is not letting in water or dirt, then yes it can pass. Even a split boot can pass BUT a split OPEN boot should not. As far as arguing goes, just show him the manual at the relevant page ;)

http://www.transportoffice.gov.uk/crt/d ... guides.htm

Go down to Inspection Manual for Classes 3, 4, 5 and 7 Vehicles .
Click browse, then click contents at top of page.
Click section 2, then 2.4 suspension general.
Click next page 8 times. On the right is the section/reason for rejection for ball joint dust covers.

I cant remember the actual wording, but it was allowing the ingress of dirt and water according to the sheetot so sure, im not so sure, as where it was split was so compressed it took me a while to find the split.

I have no reason to belive they were trying to get some extra work though, as they knew i was gonna be doing it all myself and were giving me a free retest after taking it away to do the work which they dont normally do.

And thanks for the link, will have a read through and see if there is anything else the lude might fail on.

My UKDM has had a bicycle puncture repair patch covering a nic in one of the outer cv joint gaitors for about 5 years now, never been so much as mentioned on the mot.

I had a split CV boot, which the MOT was failed on. I covered the split in black silicone sealant - it passed :)

Another interesting thread this one with plenty of good advice. Means I don't have to worry if I don't get around to changing some tatty bushes before my next MOT, just cover them with a generous helping of Marmite and they should be fine!
