My personal opinion - the Mk1 Golf is ugly, they don't do it for me. I love the Mk2 Golf, the big bumper 90's spec models look the shiznit. I don't like the small bumper models as much (which mine is  ). I think the Mk3 Golf is the ugliest Golf they made, although they're pretty solid cars and the diesels are very fuel efficient and some can even run on SVO. They are only useful to me as my 90's Mk2 Golf is actually built using the mk3 Golf CE2 wiring, so everything is plug and play from a mk3... such as say a VR6  . Everything after the mk3 was not as ugly but still pretty bland. I wouldn't want one even if the high spec models might be competent hot hatches.

Again I must stress that is all my opinion only, which I'm providing seeing as everyone else is chucking their hat in the ring

One thing I have found though is that the VW scene is on the whole very elitist, so unfortunately I don't fit in as I'd be the first to admit my Golf is a piece of jobby  I much prefer it here as it's a good crowd 8-)

I do love my Golf deep down though, that's why every time it breaks I fix it rather than binning it :D

Yep, Mk2 big bumper 16valvers, that's the exact model I like the look of. I liked em in the very dark metallic green. did they do a 16v small bumper model? :?

That's what my Sunny puts out; 75bhp from a SOHC 1.5l
Despite being an Estate, I can pretty confidently predict it weighs less than your Golf though! (what's a few mm of steel all round, between friends?)
I think the kerb weight of my Golf is 950-990 Kg or something. Like previously mentioned, they came with seats and a steering wheel and that was it, they're very basic cars! It does mean that they're pretty nippy though

Hmmm. I like the Mk1's, Mk2 are Ok-ish but I think a worse evolution, and I think the Mk5's look great and the Mk6 is an ugly evolution.

Also, I seem to recall the last time I looked (by all means correct me), that the 197BHP MK5 or 6 weighs within 20 Kgs what my 197BHP Lude does (About 1320kg). I'm guessing the turbo means it'll have more torque... as the Golf has 6 gears I'm assuming the ratios aren't too disastrous. You'd guess in a straight line they'd be fairly similar....?

....or does this mean many VW drivers can't?

No axe to grind, just pondering.

I have no idea  I just know that you couldn't get big bumpers until the 90's, everything prior to then had small bumpers. It may well be that the 16 valve lump didn't turn up until the big bumpers did, as I know the 8v fuel injected lump was chopped and changed a few times in the model's life span so I wouldnt be surprised if the 16v lump was brought in to replace the archaic 8v lump. All speculation though, I've never really looked into buying a GTi much, bizarrely

I have a Mk3

But it was a Diesel Estate which I wanted and was £150 ;) Wouldn't say I'd go out of my way to buy one if it hadn't of been cheap

Sorry buddy I felt a bit bad saying it, but it's only my opinion mate and beauty is in the eye of the beholder - look at my Accord, about as boxy as you can get but I love it personally

For what it's worth I've often found myself considering a 1.9tdi mk3 as they're pretty much bulletproof if serviced regularly and the mpg is great. For practicality they are epic for the money, if I bought cars purely on their usefulness vs cost I'd probably have 1 Mk3 Golf tdi as opposed to the never ending trail of impulse buys I currently have

Nobody has mentioned the g60 edition one, or the golf rallye. 2 personal faves. But like you say on paper there shouldnt be much between a mk5 golf gti and a h22 prelude, think its all down to the drivers. But id deffo recommend a blitz in a mk5 r32 dsg, loadsa grip and torque.
