brake disc retaining screws

Just been overhauling my brakes, and the disc retaining screws have shredded. so 2 questions:
1: is it ok to just drill those mothers out?
and 2: is it ok to be running the car without those screws in?
i cant see that they do much as the wheel is doing the same job when its on. one side on the front didnt have the retaining screws and i cant say i have noticed anything bad happening because of it.

So long as the wheels are on the discs wont move or rattle so your fine in that sense. I ran one of my cars without them

As for drilling them out that is also ok but obviously be very careful not to drill into the hub

For the sake of a few quid, why not do the job properly?!
I see what you're saying about the wheel holding the disc on, however you'll probably find the holes in the disc are bigger than the studs, so even with the wheel on you may still get some rotation of the disc under braking, whereas these screws will hold it in the correct position.

To remove my rusted ones, I took a torx screwrdiver bit just big enough to wedge in between the centre of the cross, tapped it in with a hammer and they turned out quite easily.
For replacements, and better than OEM..

The screw is primarily there to keep the disc in place with the wheel and caliper off, but it does also play a part in stopping over-rotation of the disc against the wheel studs (though that would only really happen once anyway!).
If you can't get the studs out, leave them and don't worry about it, just pop the new disc over the top.
