steering rack boot help

Post by spudep91 » Mon Apr 07, 2014 11:12 am

As above ill be fitting a passenger side on tomorrow. I had a quick look at weekend there. Is it just a case of undoing the nuckel bit and sliding thr new boot up and on?. Do I have to put any grease in aswell? Thanks in advance

It won't do any harm to refresh the grease, on the joint and on the rack, I'm using a high pressure lithium grease, though that's probably overkill.

Unless it is one of those stretchy boots you'll have to take the driveshaft out and slide it on from the other end. Since it is the passenger one you are doing you will be able to split the shaft from the intermediate shaft.

You'll need a big breaker bar and a deep 36mm socket to get the hub nut off which is the most difficult part of it IMO.

Driveshaft/Steering Rack - what's the difference

Remember to disconnect the breather hose from the far end of the gaitor before you remove it and then remember to refit after.

Also good advice is to properly clean the sub-frame area around where you're working on the gaitor before you start - that's the easiest way of making sure you don't dislodge any crap and get it into the rack.

Personally I haven't bothered adding any grease when I've done the gaitors on mine, but was careful not to lose any too (by dragging it out) when I removed the old gaitor.

Yes, it's important. If you don't have it, you run the risk of the gaitor 'bursting' or 'contracting' as you compress/extend it by moving the steering rack in/out.

Do you mean universal boot, or just an aftermarket one (i.e. not from Honda but meant for the Prelude). If it's aftermarket it should come with the breather hole. If it's universal, I've never heard of a universal steering rack boot before tbh, so can't comment.
