Another what's best thread. :x

There is no best. There is ideal or what suits your needs.
215/45/17 is ideal.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I've got 205/55 R16 16' on mine atm, what's the widest size tyre I can do without increasing rim diameter?

Rim width will be the governing factor regarding tyre width regardless of diameter.
Assuming you are on standard rims, which I believe are 6 1/2" wide, I think you can go up to 215. You've got the recommended size on now though.

Couple of websites I have used recently which help you to visualise how different size alloys and tyres look:

http://www.willtheyfit.com

http://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp

Also, here's the link to the tyre fitment page for all the different Prelude wheel sizes, fairly useful as well.

Taken from SPYDOR's link..
215/40/17 - Larger Contact Patch, Recommended 17” Size Tire
215/45/17 - Larger Contact Patch, Overall Diameter is Larger
225/40/17 - Even Larger Contact Patch, Very Limited Selection of Brands

If you're running 17s then 215/40/17 is the closest you can get to stock tyre diameter.
