Think if I can get to it I'll mark it off and then pull the steering column out of the rack to see how much engagement there is.

Any idea of the minimum requirement? I'll go check the manuals now.

EDIT: Scrap that. Doesn't the spline have a crescent cut out of it for the bolt to slide through to ensure the correct engagement?

Nope, no anger about buying a 5th gen, I just drokking hate it when someone's bodged the drokk out of what must have started out as a perfectly good car! (the previous owner/s of your one).

I didn't say there was anything wrong with the battery wiring, just saying you can see someone's drokked with it/run new wires through from the battery to the boot. Same with the the switch panel on the rhs of the steering wheel - you stuck photo's up showing there were bits missing from it

That's what I meant - it's various reasons that means some muppet has been in behind the dash messing with things, so more chance that someone has been in and drokked up the steering for you...

There's nothing missing from the switch panel. It was like this from the factory

Obviously the previous owner wanted to keep their amp and subs, but I imagine they may have thought they'd be doing the new owner a favour by leaving all the wiring there.

There were certainly a few shortcuts taken under the bonnet, but it didn't take much to remedy them all. But god knows what's going on with the steering column. I know what I need to achieve with it, but it's whether it will allow me to

Sorted

I took a shed load of pictures today thinking I was going to need them to explain my predicament, but it turns out I only needed one...

The steering column is telescopic. This line I'm pointing to is where it was set to and now I've extended it to how it is in that pic (The maximum extension I believe). It's just it jams/locks in position and is difficult to extend. I probably could have done it in situe, but not knowing it was easier to remove the column to do it and it was only by chance that I stood it on end at one point and must have knocked it as I did as it slid down to here...

It's now set like this...

Also, for the record, it looks like the splined end of the universal joint can be extended. This was what I was about to attempt when the rest of the column slid down. Although I wasn't successful in shifting it...

So anyway, as I said... All sorted. The steering column all the way up

...

The gap now between the top cowl and the dial surround...
