Swap 94 analogue dash for digital 96

I had my UKDM el cluster fitted to a JDM car - the wiring modifications were actually done by Stan in the back of my Lancer in a car park in Great Yarmouth!

There were a few wires to extend and re-route, but it didn't take too long.

@c_doughty1, give me a shout and I'll give you a hand, I've got all the necessary kit here, and can understand the wiring diagrams, and what better excuse to meet up!!

I guess there's no way of adjusting the mileage so it would match my original one?

Ok yes mine is ukdm and I'm going to try and pick up a digital ukdm one too, I've got all the wiring diagrams so I should be ok....but I'm no auto electrician. I make kitchens for a living.

Once I've experimented with my 2 and got it down to a T - I'll fit your dials for you, in return for a new kitchen. How's that sound?

Not that I know of. I'll just be taking a picture of new/old next to each other on the day they get swaped, for record purposes.

Thanks, we'll see - I have in mind to stick a conservatory/orangery/whatevertheheckyoucallit extension on the side of the kitchen maybe this year*, which would mean replacing the manky kitchen I currently have, so I may well be in touch!

(* it just gets a bit complicated because where I want to extend out to, is over the top of the main drains and manholes for the house )

Stage 1, markup things that are the same or different on schematics;






First time you look at the schematics, a lot appears to be different, but that's just because some things are laid out differently.
(nb: things that are different internally in the instruments are immaterial really, so I stopped marking them all up and all the invertor box stuff is new so again, haven't highlighted it all)

Basically the changes and additions on the EL schematics are;
- Various connector pin swaps
- An additional permanent +ve feed
- An additional connection to the clock
- The wire to the Dash Lights Brightness Control Unit has changed from Red to Red/Yellow

Something doesn't compute atm though... On the schematics there are the following number of connections;
- EL Dials = 15
- non-EL Dials = 17

But when I check what's on my car and the pigtails that came with the new clocks, I have the following;
- EL Dials = 19
- non-EL Dials = 16

So there's some jobby connected in that isn't shown on the main dial schematics and have got to go hunting for.

Interesting... The differences between EL schematics and pig tails that came with the dials are;
- Pig tails have an extra black on pin C6 (I assume this is an earth)
- Pig tails have 4 wires on connector A, schematics has no wires going to connector A


Anyone on here got a UKDM that has EL dials fitted from original and is willing to just check if they have anything plugged into connector A, please?
It's the one at the bottom of this pic. Should be able to see it just be taking the top dash trim off and the black divider strip between the clocks and gauges (no need to take the clocks or gauges out).

@indigolemon - any pics from when you did your conversion, or can you remember if you had anything on that connector?

EDIT: If C6 is an extra earth, it doesn't bell out to the other earth on B6, or dials chassis ground

Ok, so the non-EL Dial schematic has an extra yellow wire off A7 that goes to the A/T control unit. My car's a manual so that explains the difference between my car and the schematic for my car - 16 wires matches with 16 wires now

From much studying of the manual supplements, I think 3 of the 4 wires on EL-dial schamatic plug A might be to do with a 'Cruise Control Dimming Circuit" (basically a whole load of extra wiring and an extra control unit, just so the cruise control button lights up and also dims along with all the rest of the dash!!! )
Basically I think I'll try with nothing connected onto EL dials connector A and see how I go

might also dig out my other set of UKDM EL dials and see if they even have connector A
EDIT: Found them and they also have connector A
