I was contemplating a B16 as it's a bit lighter, cos aH22 in the back will mean it's always doing wheelies

The difference being that the Porsche engine conversions don't require an engine bay and frame building in the back to mount the engine and transaxle, that'd add quite a bit of weight in the back.

I would love to build a wheelie beetle, and may end up having a play with this one in time.

Change of plans

Post by Crazy_C » Tue Jan 07, 2014 10:10 pm

Ok, so the plan has changed already!! I've won a LHD 1979 Beetle on eBay. Body is in good condition other than the fenders having a couple of dents (ah well!) and it's actually an ex-magazine cover feature car too!! It's tidy, it's solid, but it has no engine.

Good thing it didn't have an engine, cos I got it cheap!!!

Going to pull the 1600 twin port out the Hummock, and put it in the new bug (which will also be known as the Hummock!)

I will be using certain parts off the old Hummock, with it being a '71, has the different doors and decklid to the '79. I will also use part of the slam panel and part of the spine of the '71 chassis as well

Makes life a lot easier, no welding needed. Just now I have a load of panels I don't need. Wonder if I can get store credit?

Solid(ish) Shell

Post by Crazy_C » Wed Jan 08, 2014 6:42 pm

Nope, not the hacksaw. The angle grinder will be though!! It's not as tidy as it looks in that photo. 3 of the 4 wings are shot, but they'll be coming off anyways, but it's not a bad bit of kit. A lot more solid than the original Hummock.

Next step is to get the engine in. Unbolted the engine and the bugger just doesn't want to come out. Been tugging and pulling on it, but it's just letting go. Will have to give it a shot when there's a bit more daylight available.

On Sunday, when I have a day off again next, I will see about removing the bumpers front and rear, removing the front wings and get it ready for fitting some hot rod headlamps to it.

Nice, I was worrying that you wasn't going for a volksrod anyway.
Also going for an axle/wheel base extension?

I'm probably not going to extend the beam, or at least not any time soon. A lot of money and lack of funds.
