Scraping noise when turning left only (from rear)
Post by nick_s » Tue Jan 07, 2014 9:42 am
Morning chaps,
When I picked up my lude, one of the niggles was the aforementioned scraping sound when turning left only. Sounds like it is coming from the rear. It definitely sounds metallic....any thoughts?

Could be the dust shield, if it's close the slight flex under cornering load could make it rub?

I have a failing wheel bearing but it just rumbles a bit and seems to resonate slightly at certain speeds, the only time I've had scraping from the rear is when I had iffy brakes.
Check wheel bearing by jacking up that corner, grab the wheel with both hands and see if you can wobble the wheel back and forwards. If it wobbles/knocks then yes, wheel bearing on its way out.. easiest way to fix (IMO) is fit an entire hub, otherwise you will probably need use of a hydraulic press.

Also check clearance between the rear dust shield and the back of the hub (toothed ABS ring). On my 4th gen, corrosion between the back of the dust shield and the steering knuckle had caused the dust shield to rub on the back of the hub.

I only noticed it on mine because it was so bad it was stopping me rotating the wheel by hand, but it might be the cause of your noise?
