Anybody have any experience with charge cooling?
Post by Mudgey » Wed Dec 18, 2013 10:50 am
Hello,
Does anybody here have any experience with charge cooling? I know its not done as often as traditional air to air intercooling and info is not quite as widely available.
Does anybody know how the cores differ in an application where the outside of the core is subject to a higher pressure than the inside? What sort of design is better, bar & plate or tube & fin?

That looks familiar Pete. Any more pics?
Mudgey, I take it this is for your JRSC K20? So you need to create a compact inlet manifold Chargecooler after the SC right? So your looking at either Laminova cores or your typical rad style exchangers (like oil coolers). Pete can give you more pics but mine is using a traditional bar and plate as you state, it's a unit from a Landrover SC V8, so one unit for 4 of the runners. I take it you've seen the likes of LHT Performance chargecoolers?

Hi, that LHT manifold is exactly what i am looking to make. I think i am going to shy away from using Laminova simply down to cost and therefore will stick with the conventional design. After some quick measuring i think i can get away with using a two pass core thats approx 90mm tall, 50mm thick and 300mm long. Thats a fair old size and i should be able to get a decent fin density with a low pressure drop, i may infact try and get a copper/brass core made up.
340 instantaneous HP here i come!!
How are you planning on running the charge cooler in your install nucleus?

Something like this

I'm just waiting for the welder to get some free time and weld them flanges on. The charge cooler slips in pretty tight, I'll get some more pics once the welding is done.
Ratty what's goin on with urs? I've got a much simpler charge cooler half finished, just not sure how effective it will be!!

Nothing yet. I need some time to try and get the car started. Hopefully all it will need is a ramap and then done.
