Yeah, I've heard that flushing old engines with chemicals is bad news too. Firstly because it can dislodge bum droppings and send it coursing around the engine where it might get into places it could cause trouble by reducing oil flow/lubrication. But also because when you drop the oil post flush you can't guarantee 100% off the flush detergents are removed, which could negatively impact the lubricating properties of the fresh oil.wurlycorner wrote: ... and dislodging old crap inside and engine can in itself be bad newsThe latter is why I've always been very dubious about oil flushing an engine.
I have no sources to prove this though

We use wurth engine flush at work on the diesels. I personally use it every oil change on my civic. Never done any harm. Looks like the day it came out factory under that rocker cover
. Engine flush has been known to cause problems, but I have never seen it myself. Go for it
just give it a good drain time

I would imagine the main problem with using an engine flush, would be on engines with possible poor maintenance record.
On an engine with minimal deposits, it isn't likely to be an issue if you dislodge deposits which then go to circulate around the engine. On a poorly maintained engine, you are likely to get many deposits floating around, which are likely to to be larger, and thus more likely to become lodged somewhere.
Also, yes there will be detergents still in the engine after draining the flush out, but the amount would be negligible by the time you've filled up with oil.
