my friend restored one, with hydraulics etc..

he had all sorts of problems though, complete money pit

Haha, yea, this isn't going to be a money pit. If one of it's blemishes can't be tidied up with a sheet of metal, a welder and a grinder, it will get the rust rot cut out and a plate riveted over in it's place.

It's not intended to be pretty, it's gonna be a Volksrod after all, and to me, a pretty rod is nice to look at, but not something you'd drive hard.

However, if I can make it look decent, then I will do, but time will tell.

Well the Beetle got picked up and delivered to my mate's garage today by a mate of theirs, and after a bit of poking with a screw driver, it's a bit worse than I thought, but it's nothing insurmountable. Diagnosis is: engine good, roof good, everything else bad!!

What I know it needs at the moment:
- both floor pans (both sides rusted at the rear, but driver's side rear allows passengers to Flintstone!)
- both heater channels (passenger side one is there but rusty, driver's side is basically missing)
- both door sills (they're both there, mostly)
- drivers front quarter panel (some rather large holes, mostly around the door hinges)
- drivers door repairing (the lower half has rusted quite badly)
- rear body shell repairing (some holes around the decklid hinges)
- all the brakes need over hauling as they're shot
- headlight switch needs replacing as it's seized
- wiper / washer jet switch needs replacing as it's also seized

So a bit of work needs doing to get it through an MOT again, but it has been sat in a garage for 18 years!!

I worked there briefly and they sell everything you would need to rebuild a beetle, from body panels and engines down to nuts, bolts and washers.

Yea, it's a brave undertaking, and if I was going for a concourse Beetle, I'd never have taken it on, however a rat look Volksrod, this is perfect as I won't feel guilty cutting it about.

Cheers Pushki, but I have Cool Air VW just round the corner from me, so I'll be using them. They have all the same stuff as Big Boys Toys do, but just nearer

Agreed, a full concourse rebuild would require a degree of finesse in the welding department. Loved your build on the trike, hope the resto. goes well.
