Hello Ratty, ive chased a few vac leaks when reinstalling my manifold n charger etc. Can you describe the mannerisms of the engine so we can gauge how big of a leak you are looking for? Have you gone over the area with soapy water spray to see if you can identify the exact location etc?

I don't think that's the problem, the flanges are only ally, not much reinforcing and the bolt holes are quite far apart so it's always goin to be problem, do all the yanks need instant gasket when they build them?

Same thing. But since i havnt taken the car past idle its a vacuum leak. The vacuum/boost gauge should read -19/-20 at idle but it reads -15/-17 and resets itself when i spray carb cleaner to find the leak.

Ok. So i start the car up. At this point the coolant system has not been bleeded.
The car initially idles at 2k and then drops to 1500k after a few seconds. BUT the vacuum/boost gauge reads at -15/-17 but the air fuel ratios are at 20:1 :evil:
Im obviously not driving the car so thats as far as iv have got.
I have used carb cleaner and it appears to be leaking from every gasket when i spray close onto the areas.
Soaps water wont work since its sucking air in and not forcing air out. I would need a boost leak tester to use the soapy water method.

One guy in the usa only uses this

Where are you reading the A/F ratios from? ECU or have you put in your own meter?

Own meter. I had the charger hooked up wrong and it wasnt using the bypass valve so the charger was being used at idle.
The idle was super high and hunting but vacuum was at -20 and the air fuel were a perfect 14.7:1

But i could still spray carb cleaner and change the engine tone alot. :evil:

Im sure i can read the A/F from the greddy E-manage ultimate but that means taking my desktop PC from upstairs in my room and installing it on the back seat along with my massive TV. :lol: The Greddy needs windows XP to work and thats the only computer with that OS on it. :evil:

oh blimey! This sounds a lot more complicated than mine! These are the issues I had with mine:

1. One of my problems turned out to be a stuck idle control valve.
2. I ran an aftermarket crank air filter that didn't have a one way valve and so the engine was drawing air through the crankcase ventilator, through the engine and into the manifold. my A/F was all over the shop so I am quite suprised you said it was hunting yet the ratio's stayed spot on 14.7:1

I haven't skimmed my manifold or charger but the inlet manifold has lots of material around it to prevent warping, i've taken the charger on/off numerous times using the same gasket and havent had any leaks yet. Do you have studs on your charger or do you use bolts to mount it?

When i was hunting the A/F were of course going up and down.
Ill try it with the crank case breather changed. At the moment i have a 2nd PCV valve going the correct way from the air intake into the left valve cover.Here you can see it

Note that the bypass valve is plugging in wrong in this image but its correct now.

When i spray carb cleaner over the general area the engine does not react but if i spray very close to almost a quick soak then it will change idle.

Just went out to start the car and it wouldnt start. It cranks and wants to ignite but wont. :lol:

So whipped the spark plugs out and i presented with this

Iv followed the guide by the book to fit this and epically failing. We shall now have bets on how long until i blow my 2nd engine. :roll: SERIOUSLY! :mrgreen:

What about the ignition timingf? You were getting high a/f ratios before but now it looks like your running rich? Do you not need to adjust the ignition timing when running the charger? Is the ECU set up to do this?

Have you been cranking the engine alot without getting the car to start?

Where about is the lamda sensor in your exhaust?
