if you can hear a droning coming from the back of the car while driving its your wheel bearing jack the car up and with the wheel still on turn it slowly you will feel the grinding or ovalness of the bearing
they are easy to do if buying secondhand get the full hub its easier to remove the hub in one piece but remember a second hand one may not last long before your replacing it again but a new bearing will require a puller and may be easier to get done at a garage time and fuckability factor taken into account

oh yeah when its replaced you will notice the difference not just in how much the drag affected the power and accelaration but in your pocket too

It could also be a tyre gone out of shape so check that also.

Just out of interest, is there a mileage or age at which it's worth replacing wheel bearings? Or is it just a case of wait until it's drokked then swap it out?

Just run until they're drokked. >90% of bearings will outlive the car several times over. Provided they aren't overheated or otherwise mechanically damaged by external influence, they basically won't fail under normal use or even wear to any noticeable amount.

Well it turns out i bought the car from a complete gentleman's sausage anyway...
Its definitely the wheel bearing wheels and tyres checked also only cost £20 i have found a bearing but they want £160 any ideas on how to get it cheaper?
