Garage Security
After being broken in last year, I beefed up the security at my home. Trick alarm, 3 outdoor security lights etc....
Now I live in a nice and desirable town in Derby, this has started attracting the undesirables as we have nicer cars, possessions etc to steal. Now its getting darker there has been a few garages broken into and 2 house break ins, this made me think that my garage has no security, and due to my home layout.....my garage door faces away from my house, meaning there's a blind spot at my garage door, making it easy to break into it.
So I bought an alarm which I installed today, I was clever with the installation as my garage has roof on it, I've hidden the alarm box and sensors up in the rafters. The alarm trips as soon as the garage door is opened up 20cm, I also put a 'this garage is alarmed' sign up.
Now because of the blind spot from my house to the garage door, when its dark you could stand at my garage for hours and nobody would see you. I was thinking of fitting a security light above the garage door, so its lit when approached, but some of my friends said it wasn't a great idea, as the crims could see what they are doing.
What are peoples suggestions?

Well if your neighbours can see the lit garage it should put them off.
Ive fitted a bulldog lock to my garage with additional steel bracing.
Only way in is with an angle grinder.
Crims want to avoid noise, being seen so any detereng is better than none.
Opportunist theives more likely to go for an easier target.
However, people casing the joint may look at all your adfitional security showing you have something to hide.
Get rid of your alarm sticker and just fit a security light.

I reckon fit one. It will scare off most plebby oiks 'cause they don't like the idea of being seen so easily.
Hardened crims it won't make any difference either way - if they want to get in, they will whether they can see what they're doing or not!
This reminds me, my drokking council decided to start turning the streetlights off on my road a couple of weekends ago. kebabs. There was no notification of it, either. All their publicity was about surrounding villages, not in the bloody City. First I knew about it was when Lisa and I were stumbling back up the road from the pub and suddenly 'bang' plunged into blackness at midnight and tripping over the very uneven/badly maintained pavement. kebabs. Surely this is counter productive too, because they get reduced rate electricity in order to help balance out the grid, so now surely they'll use this and the remaining electricity bill will go up? kebabs.

We're all still on tenterhooks to hear about how your fence/hedge/tree/whatever the hell it was issue from earlier in the year turned out and now you go and spring a garage on us too?

Ebay night vision camera £15, recorder thingy off ebay £65 and a hard drive to go in it £20. well worth the money imo. I have 4 cameras at my garage. 2 outside monitoring the door from all directions and 2 inside to cover the entrance and the back of the garage where the tools are kept.all four cameras on screen at the same time on the wall into my office so anybody that comes in to the garage knows they are being filmed from every possible angle. I have over a £100, 000 worth of cars left in there some nights and anybody casing the joint out so to speak realises as soon as they walk in they cant escape the cameras. I can watch it at home or on my phone and all for less than £200. So if the alarm dont scare them the cameras gonna film them.
