Indeed - tis pinking!

Could maybe a bit of crap have been dislodged when removing the pickup pipe and made its way deeper into the engine, partially blocking the feed to the main bearings?
:?

TBH, it's very difficult to diagnose over t'interweb, as someone else said. And it may even be very difficult to diagnose without doing some exploratory stripping down. You could try taking a video and posting up, like Crunchy did - that might help.

EDIT: Providing the timing is correct, you would only get pinking (and the knock sensor would only come into play) under loaded acceleration and load, anyway.

tis a metallic pinking sound thankfully if you run too much advance and poor quality fuel the resulting sound isnt bang bang or even knock knock if you hear that your engine is well beyond worrying about

tis the detonation of the fuel before the piston reaches tdc if i remember rightly with poor fuel and too much advance the cylinder and anything in it will heat up causing the fuel to ignite prematurely
