Internet gurus needed.....

Post by rob quilter » Fri Sep 13, 2013 2:02 pm

I changed internet provider (I was on virgin media) to Primus, it was installed and setup today, now when I search for available WiFi connections on a device, it comes up with my new network which obviously you need to enter the password to connect. But a second open WiFi network is now available, this can't be coincidence that this has just appeared at the same time I have my new internet, the signal is also strong on this new open network.

My question is...is this open network mine? Will it slow down my WiFi signal on my password protected network, if people on my street are logging into it?

Log on to the open network then unplug your router - that should give you your 1st answer.

As for your 2nd question, I'm going to say yes it will slow your secure connection down if the open one is being raped. I am not 10000% sure on this one though, but common sense says yes to me anyway mate.

Turn your router off, see if both networks disappear?

I connected to the open WiFi then unplugged my router and I still had a connection on the open network, so its not mine.

Did BT not do an Openzone type thing, where one can piggyback onto other people's routers?

Yeah BT routers seem to have 3 outputs BT Zone (or something) and BT Phon plus your own passworded access

So anyone on BT can use your internet
