I polished my letters up with wet and dry before painting, then when the paint was dry, masked around the letters, shaved the paint off with a blade and sand again very carefully with wet & dry using a sanding block.
Try finishing it off with a sanding block Sam and see how it goes. I would strongly recommend masking around the letters though or you might catch the fresh paint.

after a few days of air drying, i fitted the cover this evening. its transformed the bay. looks great imo.
