Clever electronic people - How to make Drag tree lights?

Post by Ammo » Mon Sep 02, 2013 11:33 pm

Basically we need the lights you have a Santa pod before you go off on the 1/4 mile

Don't need the staging part, just need to press a button and the lights go from red, yellow, green, seems you can't actually buy anything off the shelf, and even more so we need it to be 12v to run off a battery

Thinking you clever people might be able to work it out with timers etc, then i can solder it up

My dad programs micro controllers, and probably already has something to do the job you're after.

I'm guessing you're after something relatively cheap/free though?

Your dad handing out free microcontrollers? :o
No just kidding

Shouldn't be to hard to make. I'll draw something up for you, post it up here tomorrow than you only have to buy the components and wire it up

Cheap yes, but don't mind paying a bit if it does the job

I'll have a word tomorrow.

I know he's done a project previously where by he controlled traffic lights for a model railway set, but this was all automated on a timer and didn't require user input.

That would be excellent, Just need a simple press a button It goes from Red to yellow to green, needs to be 12v though, we'll use LED's for the lights

NP

I don't know how much @Gayno 's dad is charging for a programmed microcontroller, chances are that it would be just a little bit priceyer than my solution but a lot easier. But I'll leave that choice up to you.

not 100% on this but don't they work on random time delays too. as in it could take 2 seconds or maybe 5 seconds to go from red to green ?

Okey I drew something up.
It will work like a drag light, Red light on next yellow after that green. All lights keep burning until you reset the button.

I thought it would be nice to use an emergency button and it will be functional as it wont use any battery power if you don't reset the button.

The links will make sense when I uploaded the drawing I made (having some issues with that at work :x )

Here are 2 links, you'll get a 3th link when you answer the following question because I have to calculate it: Do you already have lights? If so how many watts are they or are you planning to use?

Link 1 (U need 3 of those):
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MINI-TIMER-SW ... 416ee60544

Link 2:

sorry for being so fade, I'll make it clear when I'm home

Excellent cheers for your help :D 8-)

No we don't have lights yet, I was thinking LED ones for less battery use but not look into what would work yet
