Rear break pads keep sticking

so the bit you are on about is when you remove the caliper from the carrier, at the top and the bottom of the carrier is a metal guide plate that holds the pads in place against the disc

i take it that one of these plates is jamming on the pad and stopping it from realsing?
that is a real easy fix if we can sorce the new guide plate

Your mechanic is talking about the part of the brake pad that is used to allow the hand brake to operate correctly. There is a little dimple that slots into the x in the caliper piston. When you pull the hand brake to release it it should wind the piston in and so take the pressure of the brake pad allowing it to release . If this dimple is not correctly seated the brake pad will not release as the dimple will be sitting on the piston not in the X shaped channel were it should be.

If the piston's X channels are so big and fooked then your only option is to put a new piston in. Personal I'd just get refurbed calipers so all the seals etc are brand new.
