only become brittle if you douse them in water to cool them afaik the heating up to relax springs is an old trick but it has to be done uniformly around the coil or they wont drop straight

oh and it changes the spring rate so not a good idea especially on more modern machinery where spring rates make a huge difference

I've run cut springs on a lot of cars, the Holden had front springs that were cut in half!!! Aerodeck has 2 coils out the rear. As long as its font properly, it should be fine.

Compression springs with coils which are actually touching in the 'relaxed' position won't work properly.bb1boy wrote:@Sailor, the top 3 coils are actually touching.
Think of the spring 'unrolled' out to a straight bar: the flex works the same, which is why fewer coils are stiffer than more (ie: the bar is shorter). Your three touching coils are in effect trying to bend three bits of bar held together. And when you load them, you're making them rub together as they move. You shouldn't lose a lot of compressibility by cutting off the first 2 coils of a spring in this condition. How many coils do you have altogether?
I don't believe cutting springs is a good idea. Far better to get the right ones in the first place.
