Really Stupid Gearbox question (Auto Tiptronic)
Post by pbryant_knight » Thu Jun 20, 2013 8:06 pm
HI All,
Here is a really daft question.
I have an Auto Tiptronic Gearbox. When on a motorway and i want extra power, i have been shifting intop manual mode, knocking it down a gear then shifting out. Would it cause any harm to the gearbox by just shifting down to D3 and then back up to D4 while overtaking?
The only reason i ask is that other forums for different Auto cars i've had (Supra,300zx etc) don't recommend changing down like that while the car is moving? These cars were fully auto and not tiptronic (don't know if that makes a difference)
Any thoughts on this?
Cheers
Peter

And kickdown? I thought auto's jumped down a gear if you floored it. Given these two options to achieve what you are asking..... um...
or are you just wanting to save the minute movement of the selector you have to make to put it into tip? Auto not lazy enough for you?

Haha, yeah. I'm wanting to not be as Lazy as full auto but Lazier than tiptronic
It's not really that, it's just if i'm cruising along and want to overtake a few cars (not drive for a long period in tiptronic) It's just really easy to knock it down, overtake then knock it back up. Just don't want to risk any Gearbox damage.
I have been putting it into tiptronic mode then back up until now.

just put your foot down depending on the speed of the car it will either drop one or two gears automatically hence automatic gearbox

I understand all these fine points. And they are damn good points. But lets just say i want to drop into D3 for a bit then back up to D4....................will it damage the box?
