: / Smoke at high revs
Post by Turbomick1985 » Fri Jun 07, 2013 11:45 pm
Bought the 5th gen about 3 months ago, was driving one morning and pulled away from some lights abit 'vigorously' and noticed some white smoke, it doesnt do it at low revs only very high revs almost redline, iv ordered myself a compression tester will be here in a few days, iv had to put a small bit of oil into it maybe a cup full every 2-3 weeks, it doesnt overheat, its not needed any water so basically what i want to know is...
is my engine knackerd?
will i need to do gaskets or piston rings? and how much does that cost
or am i aswell off to swap the engine?
any help, advice or nuggets of wisdom much appreciated

Hmm, white smoke is normally water, blue is oil and black is fuel, as a guide.
Most VTECs of an age tend to use a little oil by their very nature, and that is most visible at high rev changes.
If your're sure you haven't lost any water, and the comp test proves good, I wouldn't worry too much, make sure you've serviced it properly and get on and enjoy it.
As for gaskets etc, there are a few seals that can deteriorate over time and a good look over your engine should show these up.

Hi,
What's the mileage on it?
Just checked your welcome post and this is a 2.0 isn't it? (so not vtec)

Is every time you see the white smoke by the way and still after the engine's fully warmed up and you've been driving it a while?
Do you only do short journeys?
It could just be water vapour/condensation collected in the exhaust being blown out.

its after the engine is warm i don't drive to hard until the engine has warmed up a bit, i was doing long journeys when i noticed it, id been driving an hour or so when it happened the first time and on my return journey i was stuck on the M25 for about 2 hours and when it finally eased up and i had space to gallop i pulled away again rather vigorously and noticed it again, since then i have not red lined it and no smoke

Maybe you should avoid red lining it. Try changing gears before it gets to that point.Turbomick1985 wrote:i pulled away again rather vigorously and noticed it again, since then i have not red lined it and no smoke

The red line is not something to aim for. It would be a green line if it was.
Red = Warning/Danger!!
