It will work, even though it is slightly on the thick side, but I wonder how durable it is. I wonder if the guy changes the oil every 1000 miles or so. Personally I would just use a dedicated transmission fluid. Also I would assume that engine oil could only be used with viscous OEM LSD's

It will end in tears.

Mine had suspiciously started crunching after a service - a couple of weeks on MTF3 and it's got better.

Meh, you dont know how he uses/abuses cars. you dont know how he changes gear and you deffinatly dont know that ''engine'' oil will work in a ''gear'' box. The clue is in the name. imho
It is an emergency stopgap but not a good idea. imho.
You have already made your mind up though so anything we say is pointless.

It works fine, 10w 40 engine oil, know a very good mechanic and that's all he uses, he was told to do so by a gearbox specialist, but with all forums and the Internet there's to many know it alls that read books, who wouldn't have a clue with out a Haynes manual lol. In saying this my prelude is my pride and joy and I will be putting in 75w90 gear oil. I'm just putting the point across that 10w40 is used and will continue to be used by many mechanics.
It's the same as all these lads with 100k+ miles on there engines running 5w30 and wondering why there burning oil.

My local Honda dealer used to service my Civic LSi and use 10w-40 engine oil (magnatec) in the gearbox. Halfords oil recommendation guides for most Honda's used to list engine oil for the transmission too when I last looked. So there is some truth to it...
I used MTF-94 for years which is Rover/Honda MTF fluid rather than engine oil. Its cheaper from LandRover and is made by Texaco for Honda/Rover transmissions and comes in 5L's, but its not the same as the newer MTF2and MTF3 fluids. Better than engine oil though.
