Battery Tray for Lightweight Racing Battery.
Battery Tray for Lightweight Racing Battery.
Post by Mudgey » Thu Apr 18, 2013 2:03 pm
I have decided to stick my lightweight racing battery down where the air filter resonance chamber used to sit behind the driver side fog lamp. I think this would be a good place to keep it out the way, the weight is nice and low and it saves a good few kilo's of battery wire running to the boot.
I will be making one for myself and was wondering if anybody else wants one also? I will post designs here of the tray so you can see exactly what it is like before purchase. Please let me know if your interested. I can't imagine the price for the tray is going to be any more than £30.
Regards,
Adam

Though I suppose you don't have to jump it directly on the battery

Yeah that was the thought after my first thought.Mudgey wrote:If you need to jump it the best bet would be to clip one end of the jump cables to the starter motor power connector and another on an end of an earth strap or part of the engine directly next to the starter motor.
Carry on

Don't think puddles will be a problem, the battery's are sealed so it should be ok submerged, tho how often do you go through puddles that your fog n indicator lights are under water?FrontBackSide2Side wrote:im interested bud. only problem i can think of is puddles?
I should have something to show later this evening!

As well as the jumping/water problems, I wouldn't think it would fare too well in a frontal or side collision either. Likely to get burst/punctured ?

It will be made from 2mm laser cut aluminium, folded, welded and matt textured powdercoated. The tabs are held on with M3 hank bushes and stainless steel countersunk m3 screws. I have designed the central part of the tray to be universal, the tabs are removable so I can make different types to accomodate different mounting holes on an existing vehicle without having to redesign the whole unit. I can also offer a universal type with full width/height tabs where people can drill the holes themselves.
The battery is held in place with a strap (see last picture).
