Get yourself an active welding mask - this has essentially an LCD display that is almost clear when you're not welding, and as soon as you start welding, will go dark.
My dad got one of these last year to replace his old one (which he's had since 1997, and cost well over £250) and he says it's much better
A pair of nice thick, long welding gloves, and wear extra layers, such as a pair of overalls, especially on your arms.
