Right then guys... Gayno has passed general organisation of the trip over to me. If you are happy with this then this is how I roll.
I adhere to a laissez faire attitude with most things so my question is this...
Do you want me to start working out how many people are actually coming, Book a multiple crossing on the ferry, book a camp site/hotel in the uk for the night, chase people for money and confirmation, deal with the eventual noshows and how that is going to affect the group cost, badger people coming up to the day to get to the correct meeting places in england, stress on the day when three people are late and we nearly miss the ferry and generally loose sleep....
OR
Make your own crossing booking, decide how and when best you and yours will travel to the coast and where you will sleep over (if you need to) and meet up at a designated spot just out of france within a designated time frame (say two hours between such and such time) and get into convoy to the ring.
Now it's pretty obvious which I would prefer but it is up to you. I honestly feel that there have been enough ideas and suggestions already to make a group gathering on this side of the water a nightmare (which way to cross, where to cross, when to cross etc etc) and I am not experienced with this form of transport. so would be taking on all opinions. Eventually there will be people who feel put out by the choices made by the group and this is not a good start. Especially if there is some kind of issue with the chosen route people get to whine and bitch and I am not at home to Mr Whiney Bitch.
If we each work out how and when we are going to get over there we can forget a shed load of problems. All we need do then is work out where to meet up and provisions for people who are late arriving etc. My thoughts would be we set off at the appointed time and drive at a little under the limit so people can catch up.
So...I move that we only consider ourselves a convoy or even a cohesive group when we are in europe. This prevents the whole group having to make the difficult decision to leave people in the uk if we are going to miss the ferry etc....
This is not to say that people who live local to each other cant convoy together, I just think a national coordiation is a little ambitious and a little pointless.

ok guys. So the idea of being asked for deposit money within the next two or three weeks would make it that much more difficult to think it might happen?
So who voted for a fully organised uk meeting point in dover on the thursday night? What would you like to see happen? A hotel booking with secure parking? a carpark party and sleepover? tents? What time would you like to meet? I'm game I just need to know what people want.

Although it's very unlikely I'll be going, I think the first option is sort of the way to go.
Less stress, no worrying about people missing the group meet/ferry. If everyone sorts themselves out then they only have themselves to blame if it goes tits up.
Nothing wrong with having a group meet pre-ferry, providing everyone has their own booking. You can all then leave the meet point when you think you need to, not what the group thinks. I know myself I'd rather be at the port 30 mins early on my own than wait as a group and turn up with 10 mins to spare. When I travel I like to leave enough time for most eventualities... to the extent that several times I've slept overnight on an airport floor just so I wouldn't have to worry about train/traffic delays early the next morning.
Also having your own booking means that those who are unsure about attending wont have additional pressure on this. I'd like to go but really cannot commit. I'd hate to be in the position where a group booking was going on and I'd feel like I'd have to pay now, then lose out on money or have to ask for a refund at a later date if it doesn't work out for me.
Sort yourself out I reckon. As said, you only have to answer to yourself then.
I will say though if there's a possibility I can still go but as a passenger slut then if it's cool I would reimburse costs to whoever I'd be riding with. e.g. LLL if you prepared your ferry booking just for yourself, worked all your own costs and were sorted but then I wanted to hitch a ride, I would of course reimburse you 50%. Same for petrol, tolls, etc.

good skills donald.
A passenger pool is still totally on the cards, we would just organise who wants to be a passenger and who the closest driver is to them. they can then meet up and drive over together. The pool part of the mission begins when we meet up. All the passengers can switch cars and off we go
The standard costs per car are going to be the same give or take a few miles in the uk so we really should be able to come up with a stable price to offer to non driving members. I was thinking it would be between 250 and 350 by the time you include local costs of meeting, crossing and fuel.
I will organise this in another thread.

For those that want to work out costs.
2013 Nordschleife prices:
1 lap: €26
4 laps: €97
9 laps: €202
25 laps: €499
Don't plan on having an accident because it is expensive.
Just some things to add to your organisation thread too LLL:
I think it's a smart move to get yourself a European Health Insurance Card (http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcare ... -ehic.aspx). It doesn't cost anything and IMO if something's free and could be beneficial it's worth doing. I know we're all in the EU/EEA but Germany has some healthcare fees that of course we don't have here (unless you go private). You might still have to pay for stuff in Germany but you can get it refunded with a EHIC.
You should all probably have one of these too if you don't already

Excellent value for money and if needed I can make a thread on what bandages/dressings should be used for what and how. I know it might seem silly but using the wrong thing on the wrong injury will be a waste of materials and wont be as effective, if one of you hurts yourself in a bumming accident you don't want to bleed to death before emergency services arrive. Can't hurt to be prepared, even if this does seem a little OTT.
