Gearbox Assistance Required 23rd March
Post by gordonlear » Fri Mar 08, 2013 8:43 pm
I have just got myself a donor 5th and need some help swapping over the auto boxes from the donor car to the good car.
This means removing a gearbox from each car and fitting the good one.
Food and drinks will be provided by my wife and daughter. Can you please let me know if and when you could help as I would like it done in time for Japfest.
I live in Frome, Somerset
Thanks

Your gonna need the engine crane to support the weight of the auto box rather than the engine. A normal box weighs enough as it is, god knows what an auto box is.
Also its a 36 socket for the hub nuts.
Your also gonna need one huge container for the oil. Thats about 12 ltrs of oil of the top of my head.
I wanted to offer my help but I cant till something like the 10th of april.

Gearboxes are a PITA to manhandle. The weight isn't the main issue, it's the bulk/unweildiness of them, the fact that weight is always unbalanced but the alignment of the gearbox has to be 'just right' to fit (lugs and splines etc) and that you're leaning over from the top to do all this, in a really unhelpful awkward position...
I normally look at it that you might as well just rip the engine out with a hoist, split them on the bench and be done with it.
