i dont speak from experience here!! I am game for the most cost effective/time effective way of getting over the water that gives us the shortest drive on the other end.

Dunkirk will only take about half an hour off driving on the continent as it's closer to Belgium, so you'll still be an hour behind time-wise, but you'll have an extra £20 in your pocket!

Yep. If you're staying over near Dover, the boat won't feel too much like the start of a nice drive.
But if you're coming from a decent distance away, it's a nice break. We still use the boat even though our first leg is only about 2 hours. However, as Gayno mentions, you save only half an hour each way (and a gallon of petrol ...)

Whatever you choose, try to avoid going round Brussels in the rush hours. Or Lille. Or Antwerp.
