Fog light rules
Post by gav1892 » Sun Dec 09, 2012 10:02 am
Can anyone enlighten me on the MOT rules for a rear fog light. I was hoping to change my third brake light to the fog light rather than cut a hole in the rear bumper or have a crap looking one hanging from the bottom. cheers

A rear fog must be on the drivers side. you would not be able to use the third brake as a fog on it's own. plus with most people used to seeing a third brake light being used as a third brake light most people would not realise it's a fog light.
A simple fix is to use a extra bright led light bulb in the O/S reversing light. All i did was cut the wire for the reverse light then using a wire extended from the fog wiring crimped into the reverse light wire and hay presto a MOT passing fog light. I've got some work to do on the Lude today so I'll see if I can take a pic.

ive also seen it done using the led brake light strip out of the standard spoiler then cutting this into the centre of the lip at bottom of the rear bumper, alot more effort but it did look quite good. if i remember right johnny b did it on puk a few years back.

The rules basically say that it is to be on the centre of the car, or towards the off-side. Height is to be betwen 250mm and 1000mm above the floor, and it must be 100mm away from a stop/tail light.

I agree that the driver's side reversing light with a red bulb is probably the best option.

Lower your car enough so you can use a spoiler brake light? I use to wire them into the centre 2 brake lights on the gto's but with a relay so you still had 5 brakes lights when fogs were off. Had no issues with police or mot's
This clearly inst helpful for Prelude tho! If i didnt have a hole in my bumper I would put one in the centre at the bottom of the bumper, similar to the Minis.
