Smashed rear screen. What to do?

Post by judderod » Sat Sep 21, 2013 12:04 pm

Hi all,

I woke up to find my rear screen smashed this morning :(

Image

I don't know if a tile or something fell from our roof or if some unsavoury sort pleasured themselves by breaking it. But I can't find anything lying around that looks big or heavy enough to have done it so I guess it was probably done 'for a laugh'...

What should I do? Do I need to speak with insurance, buy one from Honda, or call a local windscreen repair place? Or perhaps pick one up second hand and fit it myself :?:

 Sucks.

It doesn't need to be something heavy though, just pointy enough and hit it at the right angle/place.

Worth a call to your insurance company, see if the rear screen is covered. If so, it'll onl be a £40-£50 type job, otherwise it'll set you back a couple of hundred if you get it done yourself.

Any windscreen company should be able to get you one easily enough. What tint is it? Looks to be the green/blue tint? If so, that tends to be in stock in this country quickly (same/next day) whereas bronze tint isn't and takes a couple of days.

Thanks wurly.

I just spoke to my insurance's glass repair helpline but they said as I'm not fully comp it won't be covered. Someone's going to call back with a quote.

I guess it's green/blue. It's an original Honda screen.

Quotes for new will be stupid money from the national outfits. Try you're local companies. Failing that look our for one breaking.

As Kawa says, try local window companies.
FWIW I paid to have a brand new front screen (with new trim) fitted by a local company and it was around the £450 mark. Autoglass were (if I recall correctly :? ) around the £600 mark.
I think it was an extra £150 because it was bronze so like I say, hopefuly you should be around the £250ish mark for the blue/green tint? Rear screen might be more expensive of course, because of the heated elements/sell less of them. Might also need to come with the rubber edge trims? (Not sure you'd get those off the old glass in one piece and be able to stick them back on to the new one?)

They will ask you to confirm the tint colour. Easiest way to check that is get a bit of white kitchen towel or similar and hold it inside one of your door windows while you look through at it from outside, under daylight.

OK I just had a chat with a local company. £600 fitted - he said they can only get the glass from Honda and the fitting is about £100.

He also mentioned if I can get a 2nd hand one they could fit it. They might even be able to remove the 2nd hand one for me, drive it down to me and then fit it for a bit extra. Anyone got a breaker? I'll have a look at the for sale section. Apparently removing an old one is difficult and will probably need a cheese wire type thing.

Thanks a lot for the offer TR. I'd hoped CrunchyAdams might have one as he's not to far away, but no luck.

I'll put a wanted post up just in case there's anyone nearer.

Seems like a strange type of shatter pattern, with no visible impact point?

Worth checking that the heated window relay hasnt got stuck on? Because they are high power items, they normally dont go through any other relay/fusebox, so should the relay get stuck on, even after your out the car and ignition is off, it can still be powered, and then heat up enough to shatter the window (i dont have a prelude schematic to hand to check if thats the case).

Wouldn't want to hassle of putting in a new window, and the same thing happen again!
