I'm looking into doing a smart repair course soon to add to my valeting business as we get asked alot about this sort of thing and to work on my car ill be looking at wheel refurbs and bumper/scratch repairs not full panel work. Can anyone recommend a good start up kit to buy for doing this sort of thing. My mrs is asking me what I want for my birthday so could be this lol

I wanted to get the Merguirs G220V2 to start polishing and getting the car's colour back to it's true glory.

Cheers nitin I've already got a mop at work as we do full body mops already. I'm looking for info on compressors and air guns really and sanders I suppose

Thanks for the nod merc but I would have to agree with Rob on this one. Ratty is the man for 'real' paint equipment on the site. I play about with repair and polishing for beer money, he does it for real..

Unfortunately you cant do a propper smart repair without doing the whole panel from my experience. You can but it will look bad. Colour needs alot of area to blend out and blending lacquer is no ideal unless its a bumper scuff.
SMart repair isnt a good term to use IMO. FOr example if there is a sctrach on the back of a front door. On 90% of the colours im going to be spraying BOTH doors fully to get the colour to match and be fully guaranteed.

You can buy equipment and get started but IMO you need to be trained 1st and then get loads of experience.
Experience is the key.
I spent a day with one of the chipsaway guys whos been at it for many many years and my head hurt after learning so much.

The do bespoke courses and IMO seems like a logical move. I may end up doing a PDR course. Also i intend to become BSA approved soon and take on the advanced panelbeating and paint course to be recognised at an insurance approved repairer.

Cheers mate appreciate the advice ill take a look on the website tomorrow. Wheel refurb is the main thing I get asked about and seems from previous experience quite a simple process as long as they don't need blasting. I would like to do a course on panel spraying and I understand that you will more than often need to do the whole panel and surrounding ones as well. Ill think of some questions tonight and fire them up tomorrow.
