Leather restorer

Post by bennyboy » Tue May 07, 2013 10:22 am

Right, need to do the half-leather in the aerodeck, anyone got any suggestions for a good restorer/colour treatment? (it's black)
Have seen a few on amazon etc that are a chunk cheaper than stuff you'll find on the shelves, the reviews seem to be good but I like to hear what you guys use.

Last time I did mine I used the Autoglym Leather Care Balm stuff. Softened it up a bit more, hid some of the wear marks, cleaned it up nicely (shocked at the amount of crap I had on mine) and smelled like my grandad's Audi in the 90s. It brought colour back but didn't leave it looking mega fresh, left it with a bit more depth with a more matte finish than shiny. IMO that's what you're after, leather that's too shiny can look cheap sometimes.

Others will swear by the Gliptone stuff. I went for the Autoglym purely for ease of use, one liquid, put on, buff off. Whereas the Gliptone is a two-stage process but I've heard it gives a better finish. Gliptone Liquid Leather Cleaner & Conditioner. I think Ratty has recommended the Gliptone stuff in the past.

I hope this is what you were after  Not sure about colour treatment as such. Pushki dyed his?

Thanks so far chaps 8-)

@Donald, thing is there are plenty of 'bare' areas that need the colour back in them, so I'm probably looking for a black leather treatment.

 As Merlin tagged, Pushki might be able to help with that then because he just dyed his entire seat. ;)

I also use this, it works well. Softens up nicely and brings back a small amount of colour.

Hey guys, here's the part in my PUK profile where I dyed my seats using Gliptone Scuffmaster.

I’ve wanted a leather interior for my car for ages, but because of the rarity, they are hard to come by.
Also because of the age, any that do become available are in a poor state particularly the driver’s side bolster.

I was offered a couple of front seats by MaDMaXX. Cheers MaXX. [smilie=hate-ok.gif]
Originally owned by Mattblack lude and briefly by dlongmu I believe.

They were the wrong colour, I wanted black, but they seemed in very good condition, just some scuffing on the bolster.
After doing some research, I found that you can re-colour leather..........................so I bought them.

Image Picture courtesy of MaDMaXX

I bought a re-colouring kit from Gliptone.

After dismantling them I cleaned and conditioned the leather in preparation for the dye.
Then I set about re-colouring them black. [smilie=hate-cool.gif]

Once I was happy with the finish, I swapped the seat pans and rails over with the ones from my velour seats.
It seemed a bit of a shame, as my velour seats were in exceptional condition. :(

I know someone who prefers my old velour seats. :P

The finish on these seats looks great, but I’m sure it’s not as hard-wearing as the original leather.
If it starts to peel off or wear out, I will be on the lookout for some more seats. I may even do the S2000 conversion.

I’ve got a couple of leather centre console lids coming to me, both of which will need some work. #-o

All I need now are some rear seats and door card inserts, *hint hint*.
They’ll have to be black, as I never want to attempt this again. It’s too much like hard work.
