Thanks for the tip but it's definitely been caused by impact. There's a hole about halfway up the screen on the left. You can see it in the pic, just to the right of the black line on the screen (that's a reflection of a telephone line above). It's hard to see in the pic but all the crazed lines start from that point.

Not that it helps you that much mate but that is intentional, will be something handheld too, not a thrown/falling item. Thrown it would have to be small, would need to be above the car to hit it head on and travelling at considerable speed. I've hit toughed sheets at work with a club hammer with the strength of Thor and they rarely break, the edge is the weak spot. Pointy hand held object will do it though, any CCTV nearby?

Rear screens aren't laminated though Donald, they're toughened (IIRC :?) so they shatter and get damaged much more easily than a windscreen. Honestly, it doesn't need to be much force, just a point impact hitting it just right.

Wurly I have worked with glass on and off since I was 18  I know it's not laminated. And yes, hitting it right with something pointy is near enough what I said ;)

Not sure why you've mentioned laminate but it's inferior to toughened in almost all scenarios and is a nightmare to work with. Laminate is typically 4.4mm or 6.4, not 100% sure what a windscreen is but I would assume 6.4 so it's in practice two pieces of 3mm. Again assuming, but it's only used in windscreens to stop you getting a faceful of glass and so you can still see if it smashes when you're driving. Laminate is weak to frontal impact (in terms of how much force is needed to break it) whereas toughened is unlikely to break unless something pointy hits it, such as a spark plug as merc suggested. As said, I've had quite a lot of experience smashing toughened glass and it's harder than you'd think. most annoying when you chuck a bit in the skip and it doesn't smash so you have to climb in after it to finish the job .

you could just get a hard hat glue a spark plug to the top stand in the skip and get someone to drop the glass onto your head

Oooh! Touchy touchy today

Quite a bit of experience with toughened glass myself too (oiks like to try and smash it on trains). Like you say, sometimes it can be an arse to smash toughened, but sometimes it'll go with no effort at all because yiu happen to have hit it with just the right edge at just the right place, at just the right angle and leaves you going... gotta do that all again then!

I think we're saying the same thing, just I'm saying it couldn't just have been vandalism, it could still just have been something small falling on it and you're being all conspiracist on us... :hurr:

Now get your arse to the next mimms meet and we can fight over the point like men! :poke:
