It's amazing isn't it? I went to a seminar at a 3D printing company and the NHS also attended as they were wanting to use them for producing cranial plates for patients using their MRI scan data!

Where as usually the surgeon would have to expose the skull and the area they were wanting to plate, and then cut and shape a sheet of titanium using blatant trial and error until they got it looking right, which obviously took a fair amount of time. Now they were able to use the MRI scan data and 3D printing (which can be done in numerous metals including titanium) to produce the perfect formed plate before surgery!

Yep, that's exactly what they were saying in the news item about this story on BBC news at ten tonight.

That patient has made it into the science museum already :10:
