Must have put the front hub together wrong or something

...The drive-shafts are all the way in, but the hub nut should go on further than this surely...Will have another look tonight...

How does it look from the rear? The drive shaft has to be flush with the back of the hub. Will it tighten up any more?
When I rebuilt the front of my car the other night I got the drive shafts in so far (just like your pic) but tightened the hub nut to pull the rest of the drive shaft spindle though.
Are they brand new hub nuts?

Also, shouldn't the be a split pin to prevent the nut coming off?

There isnt a split pin. There is a groove on the end of the drive shaft that you bash the lip of the hub nut into.

You just mash the edge of the nut into the groove on the driveshaft, when it's done up. I used a beefy flat head screwdriver.

It was a couple of years ago since I did this but I remember something about getting a washer the wrong way round when this happened? Something like that. It was very simple to sort anyway!

A washer? I don't recall seeing one. Unless it is specific to only ABS 4th gens (I have an ABS 5th and a non-ABS 4th). Or are you on about the knuckle ring, but that can only go in one way and doesn't need to be removed to get the drives haft out
Edit - Just looked at the 4th gen manual and there is a spindle washer but that is only on the rear (page 18-31), not on the front.

While I'm talking about knuckle rings, the lip of the knuckle ring hasn't been accidentally bashed has it? That would stop the spindle from being pulled through.
