A whine when turning the wheels while moving, and the steering feeling slightly stiff - power steering pump on the way out?

Check the fluid level

Also check the condition of the fluid, is it brown or a nice clear/light red? Probably just needs replacing but its worth checking if you have any leaking from the normal places like the hose leading off the pump towards the back of the car.

Also check the belt tightness, the whine could be it slipping........

Pump screeching when it's just ticking over. The fluid is low though, about 3" below the line!

As for your actual problem... If your fluid level is that low, then you probably have a leak and with the fluid level that low, the pump may be getting starved.

Get it topped up asap and if you're lucky that will be all that's needed. If you're unlucky, then it may have already caused some damage and yep, your pump be on the way out...

Well, the little that came out of the PS system looked like cat's puke, so I topped it up with new stuff and the pump stopped squealing.

Hopefully I caught it in time.

I'll just have to monitor the level to see if i've a leak now.

That means there is air in the system and it's foaming up the oil. Top it up and leave the cap open and turn the wheel lock to lick a few time with the engine on. That should remove the air lock.
