Lude Generation

Hi guys,
In the process of upgrading my brakes on the front to 282's, I know it's a straight fit for the 4th gen discs but I have a few general questions.

For the front discs I'm deciding between Brembo solid discs and MTEC ones. Brembos are much more expensive (£90 vs £66) but I've heard very mixed views on MTEC discs so I'm not sure on those. Also I'm stuck on the "style" (if I do go for MTEC discs), as I don't drive that hard which style would be best for pad life? I've read that drilled brakes can crack and grooved can turn pads to butter (the internet has far too broad a spectrum of information for simpletons like me ).
Pads wise I was looking at Hawk HPS for the front, just want to double check these are the correct ones?

Anyone know if there is any difference between the base ones and the 5.0 for the extra tenner?

For the rears (they need replacing anyway) I'm really struggling to find 5G 4 stud discs, can I just use 4G ones (as far as I've read all rear brakes are the same)? MTEC has rears for a 4G for £56 but the 5G 4 stud ones are £100 Only difference I can see is a 1ml difference in height and thickness.

For pads I was just going to chuck basic Mintex ones on there.

As you can probably see I've made a right mess of something I thought should be really simple haha! Any help much appreciated, cheers.

All that seems a bit pricey....
Standard Disks and pads will normally do for road use.
As your brakes will be the same as 4th gen ones i should be able to help (282mm vented at the front and 260mm solid at the back. 4 stud)
Rear.I normally go for the coated discs at the back as they dont go all rusty like the uncoated ones. Pagid, Brembo,Blueprint
Pads Pagid, Brembo, OEM. (Mild Upgrade - I found a set of black diamond predator pads for £30).
Fronts. Pagid,Brembo or Blueprint blank discs
Pads Pagid,Brembo, OEM (Mild Upgrade Black Diamond predator,EBC red stuff, Track- Hawk HP+,Ferodo DS2500)

Nothing wrong with MTEC discs. I've used them a number of times on various shapes of preludes. MTEC supposedly produce discs for car manufacturers in the UK, so they can't be bad I've had drilled and grooved and just grooved. Never had any cracking or other issues.

It's true though, grooved discs can eat the pads quicker, but that's the price you pay for superior braking. The grooves as I'm sure you know are there to expell the gases created under braking, of which under prolonged braking can cause the pads to glaze over.

4th gen and 5th gen 2.2 Vtec pads are the same, so yes, go for the cheapest I'm not 100% sure that 2.0l pads are the same as vtec ones, so I'll let someone else chime in on that.

I've got Hawk HPS on the front of mine. They're good pads

Again, 5th gen rear setups are the same as 4th. All hubs and braking is interchangeable.

I agree but it's really hard to find reasonably priced stuff for the 2.0 5G, now that I can use 4G stuff all round should be a bit easier on the wallet
I'll keep an eye out for those pads and see if I can pick up a set.

Interesting...I think I'm leaning towards grooved only as I'd probably see a greater benefit in the extra surface area vs cooling and drilled are overkill for me anyway. Interestingly even after the Eurocarparts discount the MTEC discs are slightly cheaper so I'm leaning towards those.

MTEC Discs, Mintex rears and the HPS fronts all comes to just under £200 which is mighty tempting as they'll last me ages hopefully with the mileage I do.

i just did front and back discs and pads @ under £100 - if you know what you are looking for some bargains do come up on ebay

are the 2.0 and 2.2 callipers the same size?

I have a set of calipers and carriers kicking around for a 2.2vti 282mm setup, no doubt with another set on the way when i take off the current ones.

If it helps finding parts, the accord type R pad is identical to the 2.2vti 282mm setup.

OK folks, after a horrid few weeks and now feeling pretty fed up of my Honda it seems this is nowhere near as simple as I thought.

Firstly 4G rear discs do not fit on a 5G 2.0, there is a small ridge on the inside of the disc that isn't there on the 5G and this stops the disc from clearing the hub.

Secondly 282 discs don't fit, the hub shield thing is different . it sticks out slightly at the top and bottom on the 2.0 so the disc doesn't clear. Considering either knocking it back so the disc clears or taking it off entirely, is it part of the hub?

My advice to any fellow BB9 owners is just leave the brakes.

That's the dust shield. Yes, you can just gently bend that clear, no problem.
You know if you are fitting 282mm discs to a 260mm car, you will need the pad carriers (and calipers? I forget that for sure) from a 282mm car as well, right? Otherwise it won't clear the bugger disc.


Can you post pics of the problem you are having on the rear ones please? Can't suss out what is going on...

It just bends? I'll give that a go now and let you know how I get on. Yup got all that just got to get it all fitted.
