Okay so car got 2nd mot with me and was pretty chuffed: 2 bottom ball joints, a tyre, headlight was out, battery not secure. So anyway I have parts on order that is needed however about 2 month ago I replaced both handbrake cables new caliper to replace a buggered one disks are new as are the pads but the handbrake efficiency passed only just at 18%. Was just wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to improve this.

Cheers

Ian

yep there is a bit in the manual for setting the handbrake.
18% isnt that bad - mine was 17% when it passed last week ;) (ive only replaced hanrbrake cable on one side)
I think these figures are given as an overall percent of the total brake force and handbrake works fine imo
service brake total force was 63%.

Handbrakes are always poor on ludes. If you have new calipers, cables, pads and discs are in good nick and the pad carriers are all clean/not corroded and properly greased up, make sure it's adjusted correctly as per the service manual and that's the best you'll get. It will still be rubbish at MOT test time :D

yeah i know about the internal adjuster and this is sitting at 3 clicks after all adjustments at the caliper were all correct. i.e. bled etc.
Does anyone on here have an online service manual or will i have to purchase one elsewhere?

cheers

The service manual download is in the wiki.
There's the original manual and then 4 or 5 supplements.

Make sure the pin on the rear brake pads sits in the groove of the caliper piston.
Manual wrote:With the equalizer properly adjusted, the rear brakes should be fully applied when the parking brake lever is pulled up 6 to 10 clicks.

Oh yeah and make sure the pivot where the cable attaches to the rear calipers does actually pivot and isn't seized!
