5G Rear Ball Joints

Post by CARRisma » Tue Jul 01, 2014 5:04 pm

I’m considering getting my car’s rear balls joints replaced. I get the impression the job can be a bit of a ball ache, no pun intended. I understand a ball joint remover tool or a big hammer is recommended, but I think I’d rather take it to a garage to get it done to avoid bleeding knuckles and swearing at the car.

My questions are:

1) Are there two on each side at the rear – upper and lower? I think the upper ball joint is pressed into the rear wishbone arm?
2) How much do they cost roughly from Honda?
3) How many hours labour roughly does it involve?

My advice would be if they are still tight (not coming up on mot) then leave well enough alone.
6th gen Prelude please Mr Honda. RWD 2.4 turbo lude.

You can't buy the uppers from Honda, only the whole upper arm £££££.

Can't speak for the uppers but on the 5G front and rear LOWER joints are the same.

You can get a pair in a kit for cheaper than say two seperately, part no: 04510-SL5-000, cost is around 80 pounds sans delivery.
Single lower joint: 51220-SL5-013, about 50 quid.

You can get the rear upper arm ball joints separately and whack the old one out, press the new one in. Simples :D

They are easily pressed out and back in again with a vice and selection of large sockets, I bought Delphi ones for £23 for the pair but they didn't fit tightly in the arm, ended up getting ones off e-bay, been on over a year now, still no play in them and I drive alot of miles and drive hard! Even been on trackdays with the old girl :D I've heard alot of negative feedback about these parts on the forums but for me it was necessity and haven't had any issues so far. Be aware when installing, they are directional. I have two 5G 2nd hand top arms with good ball joints I'd be willing to sell.

Thread revival.

Thanks @Donald, think i'll go for the ball joint kit (04510-SL5-000).

Quick (possibly stupid) question. Do 4WS Preludes have 2 rear lower ball joints on both sides? Or just one on each side?
