Skimming Brake discs(not Lude related)

It s question about my Soarers Discs. They passed the MOT OK and the car stops extremely well But they are scored to buggery.
The garage says they ay not really worn and have plenty of metal left on them. He advises getting them skimmed at £35 a wheel so that's £140 plus pads which He has got for me for £50 the lot. In an ideal world I would replace them with new but they are over £200 each. So thats £800 plus £50 for the pads plus whatever to do the callipers(he is reasonable on labour and change the brake fluid as well.So with the VAT its going to be over a Grand.

Thoughts and advice gents please.
I am not selling the car as I need it for the comfort factor with my illnesses and it stops when I want it too but although I could shell out a grand that would hurt and stuff some other projects I need the money for.

BTW I know you can get pattern discs for £70+ a pop but the Lexus guys say stay away from them as they are crap. Toyota in their wisdom also make 3 kinds which are not interchangeable without modification for the 2.5,3.0 and 4.0 ltr

If they stop well and you're not having issues with them is the expense necessary? I know that brakes are one of, if not the most, important parts on a car but since you're not travelling megamiles... again, is it worth the expense? Sounds like your mind is mostly made up already

I recently had my MOT and although I changed the rear discs and pads for new ones the tester said the condition doesn't actually matter, so long as they pass the efficiency test. Not sure how accurate that is, but last year the discs were horribly rusted, lipped and scored and still passed.

Sounds like mine Donald but they look crap.If you enlarge the images 1 and 3 from 2012 you will see what I mean and they have not improved over time

being pragmatic, if they ain't bust, don't fix 'em, sounds like the main issue is purely cosmetic and not due to failure, either M.O.T. or otherwise, all manu's have a minimum runout and thickness for discs, your run-out sounds fine. If they need skimming, which it seems they don't, the min thickness is normally stamped on them somewhere.

waste of money, unless they have been run at metal to metal that has chewed them up then leave well alone, if they are just worn unevenly the new pad will wear to the contour of the disc in no time. believe it or not a disc can not fail an mot nowadays on wear alone it needs to be cracked or broken.

thats a bit expensive imho. there is a place in cheltenham does them for 15 a wheel. search about for a better price.

I wouldn't bother doing anything to them. But I disagree with pattern parts are crap! No matter what Lexus say. A lot of genuine parts are made from the companies that make pattern parts take mahle for instant. Make pattern parts but to OE quality and main dealers sell mahle bits. You can buy aftermarket bits that are made to OE quality

My logic would say why bother? The pads will bed in to the shape of the disc surface anyway. Seeing Ted's response just convinces me that my logic is sound.

Follow your logic mate, why bother to buy a new set of disc for any car, when new pads will bed it the disc shape... you could run old disc forever and just replace the pads.

In my opinion is worth to do that, but defo find a better price mate.

I belive you been offered that price in garage, where they do this without taking them off the car, right? Special grinder fitted to wheel hub and skimm disc on both sides.

Try to ask your local workshops where they have some lathe, ghat shoud not cost you.more than 50-60 pounds per set, but you will need to take disc off the car and get them there.
