Anyone got a M10x1.0mm thread repair kit...?

Post by SPYDOR » Sat Feb 15, 2014 8:21 pm

Just wanted to know if anyone down South has a M10x1.0mm tap, die and Helicoil/TimeSert thread repair kit?

Bought some Accord Type-R calipers off a guy on eBay 3-months ago and regretting not having checked them thoroughly enough when they arrived (after disappearing in transit for 2 weeks and arriving with a big hole in the box).

Not only am I missing one of the caliper springs, which might have fallen out during transit but I didn't realise when he said the calipers had been "stripped and refurbished" that he meant the banjo bolt threads had been stripped... :x

Trying to get this repaired in the next couple of days, as I'm supposed to be at a family get-together next week, so thought I'd see if anyone has these and can help before I can manage to get the kits delivered.

PS. The banjo bolt thread is the same M10 "super fine" pitch as most spark plug thread repair kits. I bough the Halfords tap and die kit but it is for regular M10x1.5mm so will be taking it back.

Just a thought mate but could you not get 2 M10 x 1.5 banjo bolts to suit the tap and die you currently have?

I haven't got a proper thread repair kit yet, just the tap and die kit, so I'd likely be asking for trouble if I tried to grind in a 1.5 pitch thread into the 1.0 already there! Doesn't look like there's enough material left anyway, that's why I think I need to put an insert in like the Helicoil or TimeSert.

Have considered drilling a larger hole and using a bigger banjo bolt, M12 if I could find one but it might be pushing it with the clearances for the brake fluid washers.

maybe tap it out to the next size?

calipers are a bit bloody difficult with this sort of thing.

my best advice would be get on ebay and purchase the correct helicoil kit, that way you've got it if it happens again ;-)

So there is no thread left then:? Or not enough to do a sound thread repair? I have the whole lot, tap, die set and helicoil/timesert kit. Bloody expensive too  but as said, doing that kind of repair is tricky and HAS to be spot on.

That is the thing what I would advice to you mate. Only problem what yo may have, it couuld be bit problem to fing brke hoses, but you can have the custom made.

Oh balls! Don't like the idea of having to take the piston and seals off, was going to try and get by without doing that, just being as thorough as I can cleaning up all the metal shavings afterwards.

Plan is to try and repair the threads first, to see if that helps, although the internal threads are heavily rounded and/or broken off by the looks of things, doesn't have enough purchase to get much torque on the bolt, so just keeps spinning easily.

All you need is to helicoil the hole but plug the hole with a rubber bung or rag to stop the swarf getting into the caliper, I have the 10x1mm helicoil kit but I'd have to find it first and it's prob in work.

Some good suggestions here, thanks guys.

Just found you can buy 7/16" (11mm) banjo bolts in the UK. That might just work, along with a 7/16" tap. Should give just enough of a cut to hold in tight and I could probably Dremel down any bits that stop it sitting inside the brake hose attachment. Hmm.
