Lude Generation

Hi,
My 4ws has just developed a problem. The light is on permanently, though is the only one.
I did the paper clip short to try and reset it, as per the Nitin's post. I turned the ignition on with the steering wheel turned through 45 degrees - The light goes off, so I turn the wheel back to central. The light comes back on. Regardless of turning the wheel back clockwise again the 4ws light remains lit.
Meanwhile the ABS continues to flash. I couldn't really get a code as it was my first time with a paper clip, and there didn't seem to be any obvious short or long flashes. Is the time considerably different for both?

I believe the ABS and 4WS share sensors, but if that was my fault then wouldn't the ABS light be lit continuously as well? It comes on the with ignition but goes out as it should.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently using the car daily whilst knowing that theres a fault - so not too comfortable doing so.

if its the sensors then the abs light should come on as well so the issue cant be there so it may be with the ecu

ABS and 4WS sharing only speed sensors (VSS and rear ABS sensors). 4WS also using sensors which are located in rear steering actuator, front steering rack and under the steering wheel. It's quite imposible to say what is wrong if you don't do selfdiagnosis and read fault code. Basicaly it can be anything from bad wire to ecu.

did you do the reset correctly? did the 4ws blink twice to show it was completed?

ditch the paperclip and use small piece of wire, just to make sure you are shorting the connector

also try the abs reset

I actually did ditch the paperclip as I couldn't get any lights to vary from the normal switch on, so assumed there was no shorting of the connector. I then used some wire and did get the short. There was a fault code but only for the ABS - nothing for the 4WS,
The reset didn't work. The light didn't go off after moving the steering clockwise again so no blinking.
I will try an ABS reset next.

you didn't complete the reset right, if it didn't blink twice

keep trying it, can be tricky and you gotta be quick.

Right. I have made some progress.
I reset the ABS and now am getting a code of 74 for the 4WS. I believe that is supposed to be after driving with the handbrake on for longer than 5mins. I certainly haven't driven with the h/b on, but it gives me something to check. As the h/b light is working as normal, I assume that there is a mechanical fault with it sticking maybe rather than there being an electrical issue.
Still haven't got the 4WS to reset, but am going to try again. I might be turning it more than the 45-65degrees, so maybe that's causing problems. Its a little tricky to judge with me having an s2000 wheel as its a spline out of central to begin with. I will persevere with attempting a reset for a little while.

You have to turn the wheel extremely quickly. Almost a split second jerk to roughly the correct angle and back again.

Thanks for the help guys. Its reset this time, and seems to be working ok again!
I tried to turn the wheel faster and not as far, and got the double blinks at the second attempt.
It was only out for a few days, but I did miss the 4ws.

I think code 74 is just a temp fault, easily cleared as in most case's

but when it throws up code in the 20's that's when its a ball ache
