VSS - Does it really need a PAS connection?

Whether you want the vss lines blocked or open is dependant on whether it works as a by-pass or in-line flow restrictor (if bypass then less assistance = vss wide open, if in-line then less assistance = partially closed).

An in-line tap seems best, provides a means of coupling the pipes and can work in either case Wurly mentions above. I'd also bank on coupling a pipe to loop the VSS side to prevent dust/mud/competitors tears entering the VSS.
