Replacing rear hubs 4th gen

Post by vanzep » Thu Jul 09, 2015 11:04 am

Got a bit of nasty drone coming from the drivers side rear - think the wheel bearing is on its way out :|

apparently changing the bearing over isnt too much of a hassle but i have a set of complete hubs and arms so ideally id like to just swap the whole thing over and maybe do both sides at the same time :)

there is a small fixed lever/pivot/fixing point at the side of the hub which looks like it has something to do with the handbrake cable - is this going to be a ball ache :?

any advice or suggestions would be appreciated? my lude is 2ws non abs

here is what i have ready to fit - note the fixing point ive mentioned - this is for handbrake cable isnt it :?

Do you mean regarding the nut seizing and snapping? If it snaps you're replacing it anyway...

no im just trying to work out what the level/bracket thingy is and how the handbrake routes/attaches to the hub/caliper
i like to be able to visualise a job in my head before going ahead with it :)

i can see lower ball joint, brake pipe flexi bracket, caliper mounting points and lca mounting point just not familiar with the item mentioned above :?

Yes, it's just a support for the handbrake cable, there will be no tension or need to disconnect the cable from the caliper, so just a simple unbolt and bolt back on.

Yeah, it's for the handbrake cable. You won't need to detach it from the caliper, just unbolt both and move them out the way (supported). The only trouble you'll have is if the bolt head rounds off.

Easiest thing to do in order to get your head around it is lie on the floor under the car and have a look. Nothing's hidden, so you'll be able to see just how it attaches without removing anything ;)

why the uprights just undo the 4 bolts holding the whole hub to the upright and swap that on its own?

Replace that bracket for a 5th gen version, it's way lighter ;)

that has been suggested and is a good call but as @NafemanNathan spotted the ones going on are from a low mileage jdm import that never saw any salt before it was broken/written off and have done less than a third of the miles my current one have ;)

:) unusual suggestion but worth checking out next time i see a 5th gen up on the ramps ;)
